2012 Monthly Exhibits At Rose Center

Rose Center Reveals Its Collection of Art

For several years the collections at Rose Center has been a mystery – especially that of its fine art. Few of the works are displayed in and around the building, but many more are tucked away in the storage closet. That is about to change, as Rose Center has cleaned out its vaults to uncover more than 30 years of art works.

About forty works of exceptional art, some by local artists will be on display in the Edith Davis Gallery through January 2012. Robert Lydick, Executive Director and curator of this exhibit describes the exhibition ‘as a fine’ example of talent the region can offer. ‘I am not certain the board or even the staff, realized the number of works that had been stored in the archives at Rose Center,’ said Lydick. ‘This collection represents a rich and valuable legacy.’

Art from the office and from various places around the facility is coming together along with pieces from the archive closet. They are being assembled for public viewing in the Davis Gallery. An assemblage of three masks by Sammie Nicely, and oil paintings by Jim Palmer and Marie Merritt have been included.

A few unique ‘Primitives’ are on display. These reveal some early 18th century scenes of the region.

Edith Davis an early promoter of Rose Center, donated a significant portion of the works to Rose Center in the 1970’s as a means of raising money for the new art center. The Edith Davis Gallery is named in her honor.

The Collection has unfolded over many years. Rose Center has been expanding its collection, albeit modestly, through the Rose Center Purchase Award at the Morristown Art Association annual juried show. The painted ceramic By Cathy Teller and the an oil on canvas by Marie Merritt are two such works that have been displayed in the office.

Fifty works will be displayed in the Edith Davis Gallery and the Jean Keener Community Room. The majority of the works are watercolors, with a few oils on canvas or board. A large number of pieces were created by local artists. Many of the works are untitled, and some of the artists are unknown; some effort in identifying all of them is underway,

The Exhibit is on display now and until the end of January 2012. Rose Center is located at 442 W. Second N. St., in downtown Morristown, TN. The gallery hours are 8 am – 5 pm Monday thru Friday and till 7:30pm pm on Thursday. For more information call 423-581-4330 or www.RoseCenter.org
